<image:caption>NEBRASKA Bruce Springsteen PUNK | FOLK • 1982 • COLUMBIA RECORDS Wait… punk? Yes. Punk. ‘Nebraska’ is the quietest punk album ever made. Springsteen biographer Dave Marsh is credited with verbalizing this idea first, when he compared the songs on Nebraska to the Advert’s ‘Gary Gilmore’s Eyes,’ and we couldn’t agree more. By now, with a major motion picture having told the story, most music fans are aware that Springsteen recorded this on a four-track Tascam in the bedroom of a rental house in January 1982 as demos for the next E-Street Band record, the follow-up to ‘The River,’ his first album to hit #1 on the Billboard Albums chart. Fans and Columbia Records had massive expectations. The story goes that Bruce carried a caseless cassette tape of the demos in his pocket, and never much liked anything the band put on tape more than his demo versions, ultimately deciding to release them as is, with no tour behind it. Columbia wasn’t happy, but Bruce ultimately got his way. The rough recordings and Springsteen’s subsequent treatment of the tape caused distortion that made the grooves difficult to track on record. To fix this, the raw audio from the beat up cassette was transferred onto a high-quality 1/2-inch open-reel tape with an engineer carefully adjusting tape speed and azimuth to fix the worst of the warping while keeping the eerie atmospherics. Then, a partly manual cutting lathe system was used to cut the lacquer, with the depth and spacing of the grooves hand adjusted in real-time to give just enough clearance to prevent the needle from jumping out of the grooves on a standard turntable. Ten songs about people on the margins in Ronald Regan’s America, sung in whispers or yowls. The central characters are murderers, highway patrolmen, factory workers running out of road, all on the margins of the “new prosperity.” And there were a whole bunch of tracks (including a version of ‘Born in the USA’ that never would’ve been mistaken for a patriotic anthem) that would crop up, in different versions later. Mostly, it’s just guitar, harmonica and Bruce’s voice, searching for something, and maybe finding it. The re-release after the movie came out includes Demos, a new live recording, outtakes and, crucially, the long rumored “Electric Nebraska.” Those are all great (and linked below). But Bruce was right back in ’82. And it’s still mesmerizing today. LISTEN & BUY DIRECT FROM BRUCE↗ SPOTIFY ↗ APPLE MUSIC ↗ If at all possible, buy it at your local record store.</image:caption>

<image:caption>DUMMY Portishead TRIP-HOP • 1994 • GO! BEAT In the early-mid 90s, we lived in London for a hot second, and bubbling just below the Blur/Oasis rivalry, the Shoe Gaze scene and the Madchester bands, there was a club culture of Drum & Bass and Jungle expoldiing in the underground. Out of that stew, with elements of hip-hop, some jazzy samples and instrumentation added to it, and the beats slowed down, came a fully formed, new genre exploding out of Bristol led by Massive Attack, Tricky, and the biggest breakout of them all, Portishead. The sound was immediately dubbed Trip Hop, a label Portishead reportedly hated, but no matter what it’s called, spinning ‘Dummy’ for the first time felt like a revolution had arrived. It’s insane to think this is the first record they made. Geoff Barrow builds crooked, spy novel beats underneath Beth Gibbons ghostly, haunting vocals. The technique used to build these tracks is insane. Instead of sampling old records, they recorded tracks, pressed them to acetate, intentionally damaged those acetates to introduce clicks, pops and skips, and then played them on a turntable and recorded them through an Akai sampler. Then they copied those samples to cassette tape, and bounced them back and forth between cheap decks to introduce intentionally warped, decaying textures. Adrian Utley recorded some of his instrumental parts into Dictaphones instead of standard mics. Incredibly, 30 some odd years later, it still sounds vital and new. Absolutely essential. Play it loud through a speaker system and it sounds massive; put it on through good headphones, and you might think something is wrong with you, in the best possible way. <image:caption>WARY + STRANGE Amythyst Kiah BLUES | ROCK • 2021 • ROUNDER RECORDS Amythyst Kiah came up through the old-time and Appalachian folk circuit. She majored in Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Country Music Studies at East Tennessee State, and was part of Songs of Our Native Daughters, a super group of folk oriented women of color, with Kiah, Leyla McCalla, Allison Russell and Rhiannon Giddens, showcasing how black musicians were influential in developing the sound of early country music. With ‘Wary + Strange,’ she set out to make a different kind of record, one that sounded 'haunted' and 'slightly uncomfortable.' She succeeded. Plugged in and turned up, this is a different conversation entirely. 'Black Myself' won Song of the Year at the Folk Alliance for the version on Songs of Our Native Daughters. Here, it's the second track, after the slinky kiss-off, 'Soapbox,' and it roars with heavy guitars, heavy subject matter, and her voice that can do quiet devastation and full-volume fury in the same song. And the record gets better from there and includes contributions from S.G. Goodman, BIlly Strings and Sadler Vaden among others. Kiah highlights the Black roots of American popular music without tiptoeing around things. And she rips the doors off the building and raises the roof when she plays live. <image:caption>A SOUTHERN GOTHIC Adia Victoria INDIE | BLUES • 2022 • ATLANTIC / CANVASBACK Adia Victoria calls her sound 'Gothic Blues,' and that's as good as any way of describing her organic blend of blues, folk, indie rock, gothic country, swamp music, garage and soul that while maybe perplexing to a certain kind of radio programmer or studio executive, hits right in our sweet spot. 'A Southern Gothic,' her 3rd full length, hit streaming services in 2021, and grabbed a mess of our digital time that year. When the vinyl happened in 2022, we grabbed it on release day. Victoria is a poet and a writer first—she didn't start seriously playing the guitar or the blues until she was gifted an instrument for her 21st birthday, and studied up on the licks—and lyrics—of Robert Johnson and Junior Kimbrough. She looks unflinchingly at issues of race, gender, religion, southern mythology and history and it all comes together in music that makes beauty out of rage and pulls hope from sadness. One of our favorite songwriters of the last decade; she puts out music on her own time. We'll keep spinning this while waiting on her next effort. Oh, and production was handled by Allen Toussaint. Come on. This record is the sound of New Orleans; when life won’t let you get there, this album, maybe with a Sazerac Cocktail to sip on, gets you most of the way. It’s New Orleans funk at its most joyful and its most serious at the same time — street music played by studio heavy hitters who understood the groove is sacred. Even then, with the same core line-up and some guests, he was putting out quieter, more introspective stuff under the name South San Gabriel. His solo records—and we have them all—can go in either direction, but this is about as stripped down as he gets. Originally recorded on a Tascam Four Track, this is introspective, quiet, gorgeous. These tracks are styled after traditional boleros, but filtered through psychedelic inflected Latin Soul. Sung by a rotating cast of guest vocalists, some familiar (iLe, Gabriel Garzón-Montano and Gaby Moreno all feature), all deserving of a much wider audience. You can hear Quesada's genuine obsession in these songs, the way the style took hold of him and wouldn't let go, and how he transformed it into something wholly new. <image:caption>THE SOUTHERN SUITE Sean Mason JAZZ • 2023 • BLUE ENGINE RECORDS It sounds like an urban legend; a kid from Charlotte is exposed to music first at church, then falls in love with piano after seeing a popular movie. At 13, he teaches himself to play by ear on a little 25 key Casio and then, in college at a state school, a legend hears him play and starts him charting the course that will change his life. But it’s all true. Sean Mason grew up in Charlotte going to church every Sunday. The movie Ray made him want to play piano. His grandmother gave him a 25-key Casio. He taught himself by ear. While attending UNC Greensboro, Branford Marsalis hears him play; asks him to transcribe ‘King Porter Stomp’ and ‘Lyric Pieces.’ Mason comes back and plays them from memory; Branford reaches out his brother Wynton, who runs the jazz program at Julliard, and Mason’s on his way to New York. ‘The Southern Suite’ is his debut as a leader, and it sounds both immediate and timeless. Gospel and blues run through everything; Mason says it is “situated at the intersection of ‘renaissance’ and ‘street culture.’” The whole thing is deeply melodic, extremely Southern, and very, very, very good. The fact that this is a first record is almost unfair. And he’s got a second album, ‘A Breath of Fresh Air’ that’s just as good. <image:caption>FOLKLORE Taylor Swift INDIE FOLK | ALTERNATIVE • 2020 • REPUBLIC RECORDS We’ve always admired Taylor Swift, even if we don’t always personally connect with her music. But this quarantine record, recorded with Aaron Dessner from The National and Jack Antonoff, is just a genuinely brilliant contemporary folk record. Dessner's production is the key. He builds rooms for Taylor to sing in — quiet, woody, slightly bruised — and she fills them without extra ornamentation. “Cardigan," "Exile" (with Bon Iver) and "August" all stand out, but it’s “Betty” that we keep going back to, because it somehow feels like a follow-up to Big Star’s classic “Thirteen,” with the protagonist four years older and making mistakes that he doesn’t know how to fix. It debuted at number one. It sold millions. None of that changes the fact that it's a genuinely great indie folk record that earns its place next to the artists who influenced it. Unabashedly political, with fiery guitars and blistering horns and lyrical themes rooted in the Black Power movement, we’d argue if Philly Groove had put this out back then, we’d be talking about Nat Turner Rebellion in the same breath as Sly & The Family Stone. <image:caption>THE FOX Harold Land JAZZ • 1960 • HIFIJAZZ Harold Land, perhaps just by virtue of his settling in Los Angeles, has never quite been as esteemed as he deserves. This set, recorded in 1959, released in 1960, has Land sounding more like Sonny Rollins than his later work, which shows more Coltrane influence, and has him backed by Dupree Bolton on trumpet, Elmo Hope on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass and Frank Butler on drums. Dupree Bolton's trumpet is reason enough to seek this one out. He's one of jazz's great ghosts — a player of real talent who spent much of his life in and out of prison, leaving behind only a small handful of recorded sessions. “The Fox” is one of two studio releases where you can actually hear him. He never led a session under his own name, and effectively vanished from recording after the early '60s. Don’t be fooled by its West Coast origins. This is straight ahead hard bop, and well worth the spin. The Craft Recordings 2024 re-issue sounds terrific too. <image:caption>Landlocked Music BLOOMINGTON, IN • 115 S. Walnut St., Bloomington, IN 47404 One of Bloomington's longest-running independent record shops, anchoring a small cluster of stores that's grown up around Indiana University over many years. It's a meticulously stocked space, and it's clear pretty quickly that the people running it have taste that goes well beyond what you'd expect walking into just any college-town record shop. They carry local and regional releases you won't find cataloged anywhere else, host in-stores with bands and keep a used section that benefits enormously from Bloomington being a disproportionately music-literate town for its size. We especially love their Landlocked Pick of the Week, a partnership with WFHB Community Radio, highlighting new music and upcoming shows in the Bloomington area. We've never walked out of Landlocked with just the one record we came in looking for. Something else always ends up in the stack, usually something we didn't know we needed until it was already in our hands. That's the sign of a record store doing its job right. <image:caption>Record Archive Rochester, NY • 33 1/3 Rockwood St, Rochester, NY 14610 Record Archive has been serving music lovers in upstate New York for over 50 years. Founded in 1975, today’s incarnation has over 13,000 square feet of space, with over 250,000 records for purchase. Even better, it has a BAR, frequently hosts live performances, sells new and vintage stereo gear, vintage furniture, collectables, films, toys, etc. It’s the kind of place you can get lost in for a full afternoon. We suggest fueling up with a garbage plate beforehand and just losing yourself for as many hours as you can. If you're anywhere in upstate New York, or just passing through on the Thruway, it's more than worth the detour. DIRECTIONS↗ STORE SITE↗ Support local record stores</image:caption>

<image:caption>Grimey's New & Preloved Music NASHVILLE, TN • 1060 E Trinity Ln, Nashville, TN 37207 We’re sticking around Nashville this week, and hitting up Grimey’s. Before Mike ‘Grimey’ Grimes opened a record store, he was a working musician. He toured the world and released a major label record with Bare Jr., then formed the Bis-Quits with Will Kimbrough, Tommy Womack, and drummer Tommy Meyer. They were good enough to be signed to John Prine's Oh Boy! Records as the label's first rock band. When that chapter ended, Grimes opened Grimey's in Berry Hill in December 1999 with a specific vision: he wanted it to be "the Floyd's Barbershop of record stores," a place people came to hang out, not just buy things. Judging by the crowds each time we visit, he got that part right. In 2002, Doyle Davis, an exec at fellow Nashville shop The Great Escape, joined as co-owner and pushed the store to focus on new vinyl, a bet that looks obvious now but that might have required a little squinting to see the future as it unfolded over the next 20 or so years. In 2004, Grimey's moved to 8th Ave S, into a building that was as much a small music-industry campus as a record store: the live venue The Basement (also founded by Grimes) ran downstairs, while the top floor housed indie radio station WXNA, in space formerly occupied by artist management company Thirty Tigers. In 2008, Metallica recorded Live at Grimey's at The Basement before their Bonnaroo set that year. The store moved once more in 2018, into a converted former church on Trinity Lane in East Nashville. With the Ryman known as Music City's "Mother Church," regulars have taken to calling Grimey's the "Other Church." In December 2024, the shop threw a 25th anniversary celebration at The Basement East, a Christmas-themed bash with covers and performances from artist friends who'd watched the store grow up alongside them. The real ones know that the real music in Nashville isn’t on Lower Broadway (setting aside, of course, Robert’s), but in places like Grimey’s. <image:caption>Third Man Records NASHVILLE, TN • 627 7th Ave S, Nashville, TN 37203 Jack White launched Third Man Records as a paper entity back in 2001, but it sat mostly dormant until 2008. That September, on a flight, White pitched the idea to Ben Swank of the Soledad Brothers, then called his own nephew, Ben Blackwell of The Dirtbombs, to round out a three-person starter team. In 2009, the label opened a physical location in a then-rundown corner of Nashville known as Pie Town. The building holds a record store, a novelties lounge with the Third Man Record Booth, label offices, a distribution center, and a photo studio. What sets it apart is the Blue Room, the only live venue in the world built for direct-to-acetate recording. An artist plays a set, Grammy-winning engineer Vance Powell mixes it live on a Rupert Neve 5008 console, and master cutter George Ingram cuts it straight to acetate in real time on a 1953 Scully Lathe that once cut masters for Cincinnati's King Records. The audience watches the lathe turn through glass, with video monitors on the cutting head in case the view's blocked. Walk in for the vinyl. Stay because there's genuinely nowhere else where you can watch a record get made while the band that made it is still on stage. DIRECTIONS↗ STORE SITE↗ Support local record stores</image:caption>

<image:caption>Electric Fetus MINNEAPOLIS, MN • 2000 4th Ave S, Minn, MN 55404 Dan Foley and Ron Korsh were University of Minnesota students with no retail experience when they opened the Electric Fetus in June 1968, renting a storefront in Cedar-Riverside, known at the time as "the Haight-Ashbury of Minneapolis." Rent ran about $18 a month; Foley's $5,000 student loan covered the start-up stock: records, posters, and, this being 1968, smoking paraphernalia. Korsh sold his half within months to Keith Covart, who bought out Foley's half about a decade later, making Covart the driving force behind the store for most of its history. The shop moved to its current corner at 4th and Franklin in 1972 and has anchored that spot ever since. The store expanded once, opening a Duluth location on Superior Street in 1987. The Duluth shop lasted 33 years before closing in 2021, a casualty of the pandemic, a water main break, road construction, and a changing retail environment, but the Minneapolis flagship kept going. In 2008, Minneapolis mayor R.T. Rybak declared June 13 "Electric Fetus Day" for the store's 40th anniversary, and in 2018, Rolling Stone named it one of the best record stores in the country. Prince was a longtime customer. On April 16, 2016, five days before he died, he came in for Record Store Day and left with Santana's 'IV,’ Joni Mitchell's ‘Hejira,’ Stevie Wonder's ‘Talking Book,’ and a Swan Silvertones gospel anthology. Founded by Marc Weinstein, Mike Boyder and Dave Prinz, former Rasputin Records employees, who opened the first location on famed Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley in 1990 with an immediately recognizable logo designed by comic book artist Shepherd Hendrix. A second location followed in 1997 in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, but it’s the Los Angeles outpost, opened in 2001 after LA customers kept making the trip up north that has our hearts. The first Hollywood location spanned an entire city block on Sunset Blvd, with as many as a quarter million titles on hand to buy; Amoeba claims to be the largest independent record store in the world. No idea if that’s true, but the selection is always breathtaking. It almost didn't survive. COVID and a brutal real estate fight forced that original Sunset location to close in 2020. In 2021, Amoeba reopened just down the street. The new location continues the tradition of free live shows for customers at the store, and their youtube channel hosts the stellar, “What’s in My Bag?” series, where the influential and famous show just what they’ve dig up inside the store. Come for the massive, dedicated section highlighting local New Orleans jazz, blues, R&B, and soul artists, and a staff who knows how to put you on to what you’re looking for, even if you don’t. <image:caption>CACTUS MUSIC HOUSTON, TX • 2110 Portsmouth St, Houston, TX 77098 Too many people sleep on Houston. It’s the fourth largest city in America and it’s a cultural center commensurate with that size. Cactus is its best record store, and it has been since 1975. Originally founded by brothers Bud and Don Daily, sons of legendary Texas music impresario Harold ‘Pappy’ Daily, Cactus briefly closed in 2006, but was resurrected by longtime GM Quinn Bishop in 2007, in partnership with St. Arnold’s Brewing and New West Records CEO George Fontaine and with the blessings of the Daily clan. In store appearances and listening parties happen weekly and frequently feature free pizza and complimentary beer. The in-house ‘Record Ranch’ features records and art exhibitions. Back in the day, Pappy Daily ran a company that distributed regional 45s to Gulf Coast juke joints, and that history is well reflected in the deep selection of local artists, regional pressings, Texas/Gulf Coast blues, zydeco, and Gulf Coast Soul. Houston's music history is underrated. Cactus takes it seriously. DIRECTIONS↗ STORE SITE↗ Support local record stores</image:caption>

<image:caption>Princeton Record Exchange PRINCETON, NJ • 20 S Tulane St, Princeton, NJ 08542 “The Record Exchange saved my life," James Murphy, LCD Soundsystem Princeton feels like an unlikely town to host a store with over 100,000 titles in stock; it’s a suburban, Ivy League, genteel kind of place, not a rollicking metropolis. But, since 1980, PREX has been a destination for music lovers—and the kind of small-town kids who go on to start legendary bands. PREX was founded in 1980 by Barry Weisfeld, who’d spent the previous five years selling records out of the back of a Chevy van at flea markets and college campuses from Dartmouth to American University. Weisfeld chose Princeton because it split the difference between New York and Philly, and because (this was in the aftermath of the '79 oil crisis) you could actually walk there. Longtime GM Jon Lambert bought the place from Weisfeld in 2015 and had the good sense not to change too much. They buy thousands of records a month, which is why the bins never go stale no matter how many times you've dug through them, and the stock is so varied, it caters to all sorts of listeners, not to mention several generations of teens, including someone at ViV, who found their community there. Loveland Ave, Loveland, OH 45140 Located in a suburb 20 miles or so outside of downtown Cincinnati, Plaid Room is a relative newcomer, opening its doors in 2015 after the founders had already started the Colemine Records label. Colemine is rooted in soul and funk, put out the first music from the Black Pumas, is the current home of Thee Sacred Souls, but has also branched out to include releases like the Black Key’s touring guitarist Andrew Gabbard’s solo country-fried psych albums. Plaid Room itself is well worth the Uber from Cincinnati. With over 50,000 Lps in the bins, across a large array of genres, it’s a must visit, especially if you like soul, funk, jazz, indie, reissues, 45s, or digging used bins. Hell, they even stock 78s. And, if you’re looking to unload some vinyl, they pay a nice, fair value on second-hand records. Pro-tip: Don’t miss some incredible steals in their yearly warehouse sale. <image:caption>Music Millennium PORTLAND, OR • 3158 E Burnside St, Portland, OR 97214 Portland is widely cited as having the most per capita record stores of any city in the US. We can’t actually locate a citation that backs that up, but there’s for sure a lot of quality places to look for records there. The oldest of them is Music Millennium, a store perhaps best known for its feud with Garth Brooks, an on-going refusal to stock his records (new or used) and a yearly BBQ that began when they lit up a stack of Brooks’ CDs in protest over Garth wanting to ban used record sales. But it was also a pioneer of the live ‘in-store’ appearance for bands hitting town and local heroes made good, and has been doing its thing, in one location or another, since 1969. The Staff Picks are always worth reading, the place is huge, it’s a maze, and once you get digging, holds everything from the mainstream to the wildly obscure. We are of that age and inclination. Toss in the nuggets that Danger Mouse and the B52s Kate Pierson also worked there for a time as well, and there’s the faint whiff of legend about the place. Both Wuxtry locations (the second is in Decatur) still bear the markings of a store founded by people who were music lovers first, business people second, and every record store listicle puts them near the top for a reason. Best for alt.rock, classic 60s rock and garage, vintage punk & post punk, current indie and alternative. Athens/Atlanta’s vibrant local scene is well represented in the ‘Local’ bins as a bonus. With a sound based around big hooks, harmonies and a streak of longing, the 70s gave the style its cult heroes (Badfinger, the Raspberries, Cheap Trick), and above all Big Star, a band that sold next to nothing when they were new and went on to influence nearly everyone who came after. Teenage Fanclub are among the most devoted of Big Star heirs. Formed in Scotland in 1989 by Norman Blake, Raymond McGinley and Gerard Love, they started out bonding over Big Star's first two records, which were still cult obscurities back then. They credit Orange Juice with proving that loving music made before 1976 wasn't uncool. In 1991 'Bandwagonesque' won Spin's album of the year, ahead of Nirvana and R.E.M., and Kurt Cobain called them the best band in the world. They toured with Nirvana the next year. They also got to know Alex Chilton himself, who, as Blake put it, saw something of himself in them. Now it's album number 13, three years after 2023's 'Nothing Lasts Forever.' Love left in 2018, and Blake and McGinley carry on with Francis MacDonald, Dave McGowan and Euros Childs. They recorded at Black Bay Studio on Great Bernera, a remote Scottish island studio, arriving with basic song ideas and working out the arrangements together in the room. The title is Blake's, from 'I Do Not Dare to Dream,' a wary nod to "dare to dream" optimism. Vinyl comes in Opaque Orange Peak and black and we’re more than ready to dig in.. <image:caption>THE AGE OF EVERYTHING Johnny Marr INDIE • OCTOBER 2, 2026 • BMG Johnny Marr's been the guy providing signature guitar lines just off to the side of alt and indie rock's biggest moments, starting with The Smiths, and going strong 40 years later. You'll find his distinctive guitar tone on releases from The The, Electronic, Modest Mouse, The Cribs and more, but this is his 5th solo record, which means he's recorded more under his own name than he ever did with The Smiths. The 'Age of Everything' is a tight ten tracks, written over about nine months while he was home in London, and later tested on the road while touring America. Based on the three pre-release singles, road testing the songs shows. This feels like a tighter, punchier record than a lot of what he's put out solo, with sharp riffs and songs that favor momentum over mood pieces. The closing track, "All in a Life," reportedly got finished at 4am on the Bakerloo line, after watching commuters shuffle off to work all day, as Marr ponders the modern malaise of too much worry happening all at once. The Smiths were a huge part of our coming-of-age. Morrissey, in recent years, has been... a let down. But, we'd argue Marr was as important to The Smiths' sound as Moz, and we're excited to see what he's bringing to the table in 2026. <image:caption>SOUL SYMPHONY The Three Sounds SOUL JAZZ • 1969 (2026 REISSUE) • BLUE NOTE We've got a deep chunk of The Three Sounds' catalog already (the trio put out over twenty albums between the late 50s and 1970) and several solo records from Gene Harris, but we keep finding reasons to add more. A proper Kevin Gray, all-analog, 180g reissue of this is an easy 'yes, please,' for us. Soul Symphony was the group's last record, and by this point pianist Gene Harris was the only original member left, playing alongside bassist Henry Franklin ("the Skipper") and drummer Carl Burnett. Monk Higgins is behind the whole record, credited on every song and arranging a full string section around the core trio in the same setup as the record before it, 'Elegant Soul.' This is a deep, grooved-out record, all blues and gospel and funk, without some of the pop 'cross-over' attempts that make some of the Sounds' later catalog feel a little lightweight. Here, the title cut fills the entire A-side, running close to 26 minutes, and it's less a single composition than a string of blues-rooted ideas that keep circling back into each other, with Harris steering the whole thing from the piano. Flip the disc over for "Repeat After Me," which leans hard into gospel call-and-response over a choppy bassline, and "Popsicle Pimp," a short one where the French horn does something you don't expect from a soul jazz record. This new pressing is from the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition, mastered from the original tapes in stereo and pressed at Optimal. If you want to hear soul jazz at its finest, without the schmaltz that sometimes crept into the genre, this is a pretty solid place to start. <image:caption>RIDE LONESOME Beck INDIE • 2026 • CAPITOL RECORDS Beck's first album in seven years, and it sounds like it was worth the wait. He recorded it in Room B at United Studios in Hollywood, reuniting the players from Mutations, Sea Change, and Morning Phase and produced it himself, with Nigel Godrich mixing. Let’s face it, Sad Beck, especially the Sea Change and Morning Phase Beck, has always been our favorite version of Beck (though we maintain a lot of affection for Quirky Beck too), and the early singles hint this record is very much a descendant of the Sea Change/Monring Phase period. And Sad Beck just sounds right on wax. The title track dropped back in April, then got a duet version with Sierra Ferrell in June. Since then we've had "In the Night" and "Disappearing Act." Three singles has been enough to show we need to stop in and pick up a copy on release day. Out now. We'll be spinning it start to finish, soon as we can. <image:caption>THE SINGER IN MY BAND This is Lorelai INDIE • 2026 • MATADOR RECORDS This is Nate Amos' first release for Matador, and his first "road record,” written on tour either with his band Water from Your Eyes, or for his solo project under the This is Lorelai nom de plume. And what a time the last few years have been for Amos: he’s toured the world and seen luminaries like Jeff Tweedy, Hailey Wiliams and indie icon MJ Lenderman cover his tunes. This record takes the Great American Songbook and filters it through a fun house mirror. The hooks that hit like standards, but the arrangements that don't. In an interview, Amos said, “The ideas incubated while daydreaming in the car without access to any instruments, so instead of being home and writing on the guitar or a computer, they developed slowly and subconsciously, existing as a sort of intangible thing while looking out the van window.” We love what we’ve heard so far and will be keeping our eyes peeled for the release, pressed on bone white or black vinyl.
