CACTUS MUSIC

HOUSTON, TX • 2110 Portsmouth St, Houston, TX 77098

Too many people sleep on Houston.  It’s the fourth largest city in America and it’s a cultural center commensurate with that size.  Cactus is its best record store, and it has been since 1975.  Originally founded by brothers Bud and Don Daily, sons of legendary Texas music impresario Harold ‘Pappy’ Daily, Cactus briefly closed in 2006, but was resurrected by longtime GM Quinn Bishop in 2007, in partnership with St. Arnold’s Brewing and New West Records CEO George Fontaine and with the blessings of the Daily clan.

In store appearances and listening parties happen weekly and frequently feature free pizza and complimentary beer.  The in-house ‘Record Ranch’ features records and art exhibitions.  Back in the day, Pappy Daily ran a company that distributed regional 45s to Gulf Coast juke joints, and that history is well reflected in the deep selection of local artists, regional pressings, Texas/Gulf Coast blues, zydeco, and Gulf Coast Soul.

Houston's music history is underrated. Cactus takes it seriously.
