FRESHLY PRESSED
THE AGE OF EVERYTHING
Johnny Marr
INDIE • OCTOBER 2, 2026 • BMG
Johnny Marr's been the guy providing signature guitar lines just off to the side of alt and indie rock's biggest moments, starting with The Smiths, and going strong 40 years later. You'll find his distinctive guitar tone on releases from The The, Electronic, Modest Mouse, The Cribs and more, but this is his 5th solo record, which means he's recorded more under his own name than he ever did with The Smiths.
The 'Age of Everything' is a tight ten tracks, written over about nine months while he was home in London, and later tested on the road while touring America. Based on the three pre-release singles, road testing the songs shows. This feels like a tighter, punchier record than a lot of what he's put out solo, with sharp riffs and songs that favor momentum over mood pieces.
The closing track, "All in a Life," reportedly got finished at 4am on the Bakerloo line, after watching commuters shuffle off to work all day, as Marr ponders the modern malaise of too much worry happening all at once.
The Smiths were a huge part of our coming-of-age. Morrissey, in recent years, has been... a let down. But, we'd argue Marr was as important to The Smiths' sound as Moz, and we're excited to see what he's bringing to the table in 2026.
