Adrian Quesada is best known for his work with Black Pumas (recommended!), but he’s restlessly creative and always working on something new and fresh. These tracks are styled after traditional boleros, but filtered through psychedelic inflected Latin Soul.
Sung by a rotating cast of guest vocalists, some familiar (iLe, Gabriel Garzón-Montano and Gaby Moreno all feature), all deserving of a much wider audience.
You can hear Quesada's genuine obsession in these songs, the way the style took hold of him and wouldn't let go, and how he transformed it into something wholly new. This is a remarkable album, and there’s a whole Vol. 2 to listen to after this one is done.
