We first became aware of Will Johnson when he was fronting the fuzzed out, low-fi, kind of Americana but loud, fully essential, early aughts band Centro-Matic. Even then, with the same core line-up and some guests, he was putting out quieter, more introspective stuff under the name South San Gabriel.
His solo records—and we have them all—can go in either direction, but this is about as stripped down as he gets. Originally recorded on a Tascam Four Track, this is introspective, quiet, gorgeous.
This is a late Sunday afternoon record. Five o'clock light through the blinds, a 5mg edible doing its gentle work, nowhere to be. Put it on. Let it run.
