THE WILD TCHOUPITOULAS

FUNK | NEW ORLEANS R&B • 1976 • ISLAND RECORDS

Big Chief Jolly leading a Mardi Gras Indian tribe, backed by The Meters plus all four Neville brothers — Art, Charles, Aaron and Cyril — on vocals and instrumentation, all together on record for the very first time. Oh, and production was handled by Allen Toussaint.  Come on.

This record is the sound of New Orleans; when life won’t let you get there, this album, maybe with a Sazerac Cocktail to sip on, gets you most of the way.

It’s New Orleans funk at its most joyful and its most serious at the same time — street music played by studio heavy hitters who understood the groove is sacred. "Meet De Boys On The Battlefront" and "Brother John" put you there.  It’s the closest you’ll get to seeing Indian Season without a plane ticket.
