For people of a certain age and inclination, the fact that Peter Buck met Michael Stipe at Wuxtry while Peter was working a shift, is enough to make Wuxtry a place of pilgrimage. We are of that age and inclination.
Toss in the nuggets that Danger Mouse and the B52s Kate Pierson also worked there for a time as well, and there’s the faint whiff of legend about the place.
Both Wuxtry locations (the second is in Decatur) still bear the markings of a store founded by people who were music lovers first, business people second, and every record store listicle puts them near the top for a reason. Best for alt.rock, classic 60s rock and garage, vintage punk & post punk, current indie and alternative.
Athens/Atlanta’s vibrant local scene is well represented in the ‘Local’ bins as a bonus.
